Ichiban Notions was started by a hobby sewing couple - a textiles teacher and an architect - who became increasingly frustrated with the lack of well-made, but economically priced sewing notions that were available in their reach.

They travelled Japan. They made friends with craftsmen, manufacturers and sewers, and were able to collect tools for a small store in Sydney, which they called Ichiban Notions.
